The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Research Scientist to assist the Project Director and Assistant Project Director with a research initiative to examine the extent to which individuals with a history of treatment for alcohol use are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality associated with the use of opioids and/or benzodiazepine prescribed for chronic pain.  An integration of records between the OASAS Client Data System and New York State Medicaid Claim Records will be used to identify individuals most at risk for the excessive use and misuse of these medications and provide information for clinical and policy implications for management of patients in primary care. The completion date for this research project is on or around month/date/year.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist senior researchers with integrated deterministic and probabilistic matching methods between large data sets
  • Analyze Medicaid, OASAS Client Data and other data necessary to evaluate the study hypotheses
  • Participate in planning discussions and research methodologies supporting the project
  • Prepare reports and present findings to senior researchers
  • Research, develop and test findings as needed for the implementation and duration of the project

Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree is required with a minimum of three years of research or evaluation experience; preference is given to public health, public administration, sociology, psychology or related field. A Master's or J.D. degree may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A Ph.D. can be substituted for two years of professional experience. Demonstrate the ability to calculate, interpret and communicate statistics from data systems and provide findings in a variety of formats to both technical and general audiences. The candidate should have experience working with large data sets and demonstrate an understanding of matching and data joining concepts as well as cohort analysis. Having experience working with confidential health data is a plus. The candidate must be proficient in SAS or SPSS and SQL programming language. Experience with other programming software (Tableau, DBeaver, SQL Toad) is a plus. Other qualifications include strong organizational, written and oral communication skills.
