The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking one qualified public health or mental health clinician to a full-time (1.0 FTE) position as a Suicide Prevention Implementation Specialist working as part of the Suicide Prevention Center of New York (SPCNY) and in concert with the New York State Office of Mental Health's (OMH) Suicide Prevention Office (SPO).



 The New York State SPO team was the only state in the nation to recently receive a $3.5M, 5-year Zero Suicide grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The Suicide Prevention Implementation Specialist will join an accomplished team in supporting local health and behavioral health systems in the implementation of suicide safer care and the Zero Suicide model ( in a variety of   settings, including outpatient mental health clinics, inpatient psychiatric units, substance use disorder clinics, emergency rooms, and primary care. More specifically, this position will lead implementation support of an innovative project aimed at creating a "Zero Suicide Safety Net" among participating Onondaga County health and behavioral healthcare providers.



Candidates must have either a public health background with experience supporting large scale health system transformation and implementation projects or a behavioral health clinical background that includes assessing and treating suicidal individuals. Ideal candidates combine experience from both fields. Candidates must also possess excellent writing and presentation skills, display a sense of urgency, attention to detail, and work well in a team. Public health track candidates must possess a master's in public health with at least 7 years of health system implementation experience, including successfully leading at least one large scale health system transformation project. Behavioral health clinical track candidates must have a master's degree in nursing (i.e. psychiatric nurse practitioner), social work, mental health counseling or family therapy and have at least 7 years of post-licensure clinical experience, or must possess a doctorate in psychology with least 5 years of post-licensure clinical experience. Preferred clinical track candidates have had training in evidenced-based psychotherapy shown to reduce suicidal behavior, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy or Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention.  Preferred public health track candidates are well versed in principles of quality improvement and implementation science.


  1. Engaging, coordinating, and supporting health and behavioral health systems in the adoption of the Zero Suicide model, including assistance with kick-off leadership summit, provider planning meetings, implementation learning collaboratives, use of quality and fidelity checks, and adoption of sustainability measures
  2. Providing baseline and ongoing assessment of policies, procedures and work flow supporting suicide safer care
  3. Providing technical assistance and support to health systems committed to Zero Suicide implementation
  4. Coordinating data collection from providers related to grant participation and evaluating fidelity and impact of Zero Suicide implementation efforts
  5. Coordinating and supporting cross-system alignment around implementation of suicide safer care
  6. Executing strategic plans developed by grant leadership team and steering committee
  7. Other duties directed by the OMH Suicide Prevention Office
