The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. (RFMH) is currently seeking to fill multiple hourly positions for Virtual Crisis Counselor of Project Hope. Project Hope is a Crisis Counseling Program funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and operated by the New York State Office of Mental Health in conjunction with RFMH. The purpose of Project Hope is to provide crisis counseling services to residents of New York State who have been emotionally impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. It is anticipated that funding for this project will be extended through April 2021.

This position will provide crisis counseling to callers using a Virtual Contact Center platform. The Emotional Support Helpline with Project Hope operates from 8 am to 10 pm every day, including weekends and holidays. Multiple positions open and coverage needed for morning, evening, and weekend shifts. Hourly compensation based on education and experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides counseling consistent with the Crisis Counseling Program model.
  • Provide outreach and emotional wellness information to Helpline callers.
  • Demonstrate compassion and understanding for individuals dealing with stressful situations and can identify serious issues such as threatened violence towards self or others, depression and / or suicide ideation.
  • Establish trust with callers and identifies resources that could benefit the caller.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with callers.
  • Manage high levels of physical and emotional stress.
  • Work with callers to explore their mental and emotional states of mind through active, comforting, positive and problem-solving language.
  • Make appropriate referrals based on observed disaster survivor needs.
  • This work and required training will be done remotely.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school or equivalence degree, such as a GED, is required.
  • The applicant must be proficient in English.
  • Must have a working understanding of modern telecommunication technology and platforms.
  • Must be a New York resident.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates or higher degree and/or certifications in human services
  • Bi-lingual in English and one additional language.
